I can't see the eLecture presentation at all. Why?

There could be numerous reasons why you are unable to see the eLecture. One reason is that streaming media is a fairly new technology that doesn't work with all operating system and browser combinations. While it is important for us to accommodate as many users as possible, there simply is not a streaming video platform available that will do all that we need it to do for all operating system and browser combinations. For optimal viewing, we recommend that you set your resolution to 1024x768. AOL users: We recommend that after you sign onto AOL, minimize the window and open Internet Explorer to use as your Internet browser.

I'm trying to use Internet Explorer on a Mac to view the eLecture but it doesn't seem to work. Why?

The new Windows Media Player for Mac works best with Netscape. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer will not communicate with the embedded Windows Media Player. The necessary software for Netscape version 4.77 for the Mac can be downloaded here.

I can hear the audio and see the slides and transcript, but the video doesn't play along with the audio. Why is this?

There are two possible reasons for this. Some associations and/or speakers have decided to only capture their particular event in audio instead of audio and video. Additionally, the audio/video stream detects your connection speed automatically before it begins to play. If you do not have a fast enough connection to handle both the streaming audio and video data, then only the audio data is presented. You may want to consider switching to broadband access either with a cable modem or DSL service. Broadband access will allow you to view the video portion of the presentation.

What does "buffering" on the eLecture mean?

Buffering is caused when the connection speed of your computer is less than the streaming speed of the file you want to see. You will experience buffering as the video "catches up" to the rate at which it is streaming. Sometimes reconnecting to your ISP can reduce the need for continuous buffering. You may also want to consider switching to broadband access either with a cable modem or DSL service. Broadband access will improve your viewing experience greatly.

I am experiencing skipping in the audio and/or video presentation...or...I am getting audio smoothly but no video. Why?

The skipping and/or video loss is a result of high packet latency and/or packet loss between our connection to the Internet and your connection. This poor connectivity is particularly obvious during the streaming process because it is a time-sensitive activity:

  1. Click on the Start Menu
  2. Go to Programs, Accessories, Entertainment
  3. Choose Windows Media Player
  4. From the Tools menu choose options
  5. Click the performance tab
  6. Under Network Buffering, choose buffer and type in 20 seconds
  7. Click OK below
  8. Go to the file menu and choose exit
  9. Close the eLecture window and the open it up again from the main web site.

Twenty seconds of buffering should provide a bit more stability.

Can I choose to hear only audio instead of watching the video?

At this time the technology does not allow you to choose to listen to audio only. It does choose from several available streams and picks the one most suitable for your Internet connection speed. If you see no video, either only audio was captured or your connection to the Internet is unable to accommodate the bandwidth necessary to deliver a video stream. This can vary due to the time of day or regional outages.

  2. Open Sounds and Multimedia
  3. Remove the sound from the item listed as "Windows Explorer | Start Navigation".

What if I use America Online (AOL) to access the Internet.

You must sign onto the Internet with America Online and then minimize it and open Internet Explorer (can be found by clicking on the "Start" Button and then "Programs or All Programs." The video and audio plays but the slides do not appear.
